The Project

Spring in Sydney is illuminated by blooming flowers, singing birds, the onset of warmer weather and a notable energy shift in the streets. To mark the season change, we were asked to curate and produce a temporary installation artwork, along the recently completed Scotch Row, to tell an ecological story.

Drawing upon the local natural environment, David’s hand-painted artworks incorporate the Willy Wagtail, Wattle Bird, Crimson Rosellas, Bottle Brush and Flannel Flowers just to name a few.

“The Flannel Flower is Australia’s national symbol to promote mental health awareness because of its inherent beauty and strength. They bloom all year long but produce an extra burst of growth and colour in spring.”

The Artist

David Cragg is multidisciplinary artist of Irish, Scottish and Bundjalung ancestry, working in Dharawhal Country (Illawarra Region of NSW, Australia). He has exhibited painted works, murals, public installations and performed live art. Cragg’s works often embodies a reflection of and exploration on the effects humans have on the Australian Country through contrasting sweeping landscapes of Australian bush with varied industrial elements.

Cragg regularly places himself as a reconnoitre, overlooking the humanistic impact on the dwindling fringes of his countries native flora and fauna. Frequently including found and salvaged items within his art, Cragg finds a forum for the exploration of materiality through the history of the foundations of his works. Thus, by at times inverting the process of destruction, the re-purposing of discarded remnants of human-damage plays significant impetus within Craggs practice. Splitting his time between art making, photography and social work, Cragg is planning a run of shows between Sydney and Melbourne in 2020 with sister and fellow artist, Noni Cragg.
